A Fallen Comrade and Other Delightful Events
I'm still standing - barely

From D’cafnaet’d’s Memoirs

A lot has happened. Things that one give one pause to stop and reflect. First and foremost, Tarque is gone. I miss him. I didn’t realize how much I would miss him, but… Don’t get me wrong. I thought he was a big, loud, lumbering idiot. But he was our idiot. And how little Leeloo wept as we watched the dragon carry him away. That was almost the worst part. We mounted a rescue, but I think we all knew in our hearts that he was gone. That fear was confirmed when we happened on his body. But in fitting finish, beside Tarque we found the body of the dragon. I don’t think he understood what he was doing when he committed to making a victim out of the giant. He knows now. Good luck out there, Tarque. We’ll meet again. But not today.

Then there is the new guy that we picked up. Edrick. He seems ok. He certainly appears to have the toughness and skill set to fill part of the gap that Tarque left… He also seems willing enough to tag along with our group. That part is weird. Nothing about us says “Hey, come hang out with us for a good time!” but here he is. There’s a familiar spirit about him… But I’m learning that it was far easier to take cover behind a giant than to hide behind a dwarf. Since his arrival I’m finding myself in the position of keeping fiends at bay while our casters do their work. This is not a job I’m cut out for. I think Tortolla’s turtle friend has taken pity on me as he spends more time lately fighting by my side than he does with the old man. Edrick certainly attacks with enthusiasm, but he is too easily caught in their tricks and mired down in their traps. I imagine he’ll come into his own… but until then, I’ll really miss Tarque.

My past has caught up to me. Again. There was an odd warning this time, which has never happened before. We faced a lady who they called the Dark Queen. Through her insane ranting I gathered at some point she was some sort of historian… she recorded stories of all that ever was and will be. Those chronicles were the source of her existence and her reason for living. Somehow Leeloo’s pop stole those stories. So she decided to beat us pretty good. In the end she turned out to be a victim; A tortured soul. Notwithstanding, she split in two and delivered a sound thrashing before we took her down. The muggers decided that all that could be done for her was to end her misery.

During what I’ll describe as a mercy killing that felt really, really good, she whispered in my ear, “As your story began, so shall it end.” I barely had time to ponder those words before the beginning of my story raised its ugly head. Mercs sent by my brother. Turns out that Montiago Dillermo isn’t the only one with sibling issues. Just, what he has in quantity I make up for in quality. Pib blames me for Dad’s death. I guess that’s a reasonable response, because coincidentally enough I blame him for the same thing. The difference is I’m right. But he’s rich. I guess I am too… it’s just that a very defensible fortress stands between me and my share of the fortune. A fortress manned by guards who never approved or understood why a man of Dad’s position would take in a Drow toddler. So my money is being put up for the bounty on my head. Irony. Vicious, vicious irony.

Screw you and your stories witch. My brother’s mercenaries (And a giant caterpillar… that was weird and a little creepy) pounded me within an inch of my life today. But thanks to the Happy Muggers, I’m still here. In some circles I’m regarded as a hero, even. I’ll be deciding when my story ends. And Pib, my dear brother: Tag. Now I’m “it.”

Unfinished Stories

From Leeloo’s journal:

She recognized me.

A fey lord, trapped in the world and going slowly insane as her powered ebbed from her, as the elemental chaos took her apart bit by bit, as she faded from existence, recognized me.

Father must have done a real number on her.

That she recognized me specifically is interesting in and of itself. Did father show her an image of me? Did they scry into our home, see me from that great distance? Did she travel with him, wait outside in the Witchwood as he visited us? Or did she merely—as if it were a mere thing—feel the kinship between my father and I, the shared blood and drive and will?

But what intrigues and frightens me most is that she held on to the memory of me, or of Father and I, even as the rest of her was torn away. After Father took her apart she managed to keep or regain that, the seed of a revenge she shall never have.

Did she deserve it?

Did father find her a vile creature, a mad lord to be dealt with, and took whatever means were necessary to hurt her? Or did he get so much out of the deal that he wronged her, sundered her from her power and took it for his own? That both things happened is sure, but why they happened and in what order is important; is my father still to be saved, or is he someone to fear?

South through the Thornwastes to find a mine, but they find a terrorized village, instead

With Tusk’s head in hand, the Happy Muggers ran for the tunnel back into Overlook, and by morning the loss of their leader had spread through the now-quickly-dissipating orcish camp. A heroes’ welcome and a large reward was given the five, and they spend a few days enjoying the city’s many amenities.

“Are you Tortolla?” the dwarf asked him. He was, and said so, and received the invitation kindly, and when he had gathered his friends together at the appointed hour he was pleased to make the acquaintance of Bram Ironfell, brother of Kalad Ironfell and scion of the Ironfell clan. “Long have we been the miners of Overlook; back when all of Elsir Vale was a dwarven kingdom we had properties everywhere. The crown jewel of them all was Kerak Lode, whose location was known to few then and is known to none of us now. But a scrap of parchment found among Modra‘s things may be evidence of its whereabout, and I offer you a handsome reward for determining if the place mentioned is my family’s long-lost mine.”

Being in the business of accepting handsome rewards for somewhat dangerous activities, the Happy Muggers were happy to oblige.

South they went, back through the Vale and down through the Thornwastes, toward the great desert. With every mile through the razor-sharp thicket they could feel the temperature rising, the air getting dryer and dryer.

And then the thicket stopped and they reached Dunesend, a tiny town on the border of the desert, built on the ruins of an old supply depot. And it quickly became obvious that the hundred-odd citizens of this outpost were unaccustomed to strangers, and fearful of outsiders, because recently outsiders had been coming from the desert and stealing whatever they could.

“These bandits might know the lay of the land in the desert,” Leeloo said, “They might know where we’re going.”

“They might even be coming from and hiding in the ruins of the mine itself.” Tortolla agreed.

“So we let them make their next raid,” D’cafnaet’d said, “and then we follow them home.”

Leeloo frowned. “Why don’t we stop the raid, and then take one hostage instead?” She was always willing to help people, and found it quite odd when others didn’t immediately jump into the opportunities when presented. She understood that the drow was wired differently, but she was still surprised whenever concrete evidence of this difference manifested itself. Lucky for her most of her compatriots agreed that allowing the raid was unnecessary, and they set up the ambush outside the town.

The insectoid figures ambled out of the sands and toward the town, and Montiago was making note of their movements for scholarly rather than tactical reasons. But Tarque stepped out from behind a rock and lit into them, felling three of their number before any of them could even gasp at his sudden appearance. After that the Tri-kreen began leaping around the battlefield, and the Happy Muggers found themselves unable to focus on any one of them before he leapt away and was replaced by a more immediate threat. Tortolla found himself pinned between two large rocks, and as the Muggers converged on his location the battle collapsed into a melee around and on top of the spires, the insects falling one by one as they approached the now amassed force. In the end, one of them bolted back into the desert as his fellows lay on the ground, and one wriggled helplessly in Tarque’s embrace. Now, to interrogate him and find out from whence these bandits came.
